We had already talked about the ongoing actions in Finland to put into practice a youth guarantee.

Now, thanks to the commitment of Finnish Social Democrats, a partner in the governing coalition, we are happy to announce that a youth guarantee will enter into force early 2013.

On Thursday 27 September, PES Women will have its Annual Conference on combating young women’s unemployment. Engaged women and men from the political world, NGOs and trade-unions will discuss the obstacles and solutions for young women’s employment.

This event marks the highlight of the joint PES-PES Women-ECOSY campaign: “Your Future is My Future: a European Youth Guarantee now!”

The President of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Sergei Stanishev, has congratulated Irish Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton on her statement on a European Youth Guarantee. As reported in the Irish media, Ms. Burton said that she would make a European Youth Guarantee a priority for the Irish Presidency of the EU, which starts in January 2013. According to the reports, Ms Burton said she would chair a meeting with the 27 European social protection ministers, in the spring, and would push to get concrete commitments.

Dublin Labour MEP Emer Costello has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton T.D. that the Government is to advance plans during Ireland's EU Presidency next year for a European Youth Guarantee to help reduce youth unemployment.

Under this idea, within four months of becoming unemployed, a young person would be guaranteed a job offer, an apprenticeship, training or combined work and training.

The government will use its presidency of the European Union next year to advance plans for a “youth guarantee” scheme that would ensure young people who are out of work will automatically be directed into employment, education or training.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has said she will use the presidency, from January next year, to help deliver proposals for the new scheme, which would be targeted at any under-25s who are out of work.

Labour Party (Malta) Leader Joseph Muscat said that while some are attempting to fight by raising the ghosts of the past, Labour is armed with “a hope in the future”.

Wrapping up the debate on the 'Future of Youth', Muscat said that while the Labour party is closing a series of debates which concern the future of the country, others are scaremongering by raising the fears and ghosts of the past.

Labour Youth are proud to campaign for the PES/ECOSY proposal for a European Youth Guarantee.  This is an excellent proposal, which is now being considered by the European Commission.  Under the proposed Youth Guarantee, every young person in Europe will be offered a job, further education or a work-related internship following four months of unemployment.

On 8 September, Labour Youth, Emer Costello MEP and John Lyons TD held a public meeting in Dublin on the European Youth Guarantee.

At the end of June this year Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) together with Lithuanian Social Democratic Youth Union (LSDYU) took the initiative to implement the 'European Youth Guarantee' campaign in Lithuania launched earlier this year by European Socialist Party (PES). The campaign was presented in the LSDP Congress which took place in June 2012, in Klaipėda. Around 2500 social democrats were welcomed by LSDP leader, Algirdas Butkevičius.

In the last month of this summer the Lithuanian Social Democratic Youth Union (LSDYU) has organised its Summer Camp in Daugai, Lithuania. The participants were welcomed by the leader of the LSDYJ Juras Požela and LSDP leader Algirdas Butkevičius. During this Summer Camp the campaign "Your future is my future - a European Youth Guarantee now" was presented.

Young social democrats participated in the lectures, discussed the role of the youth in achieving the victory in the elections, women in politics and youth unemployment.
