Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to an OECD report which shows young people in the UK spend almost two and a half years out of work, longer than in many of our competitors, said:

“A jobless generation is paying the price for this Government’s failure to get young people into work.

“Young people in the UK spend almost two-and-a-half years out of work on average – more than double those of our competitors and over 30 per cent more than in Germany and Australia.

The PES Group in the Committee of the Regions has firmly anchored youth employment into its political priorities, and believes that local and regional authorities play a pivotal role in accurately identifying challenges and opportunities, and effectively implementing measures that foster youth employment.Learning from one another and 'comparing notes' on bad or good experiences is a part and parcel of the exercise.

Almost 15m Europeans below the age of 30 are neither in employment, nor in education or training. In total this corresponds to a midsized EU country. In Italy they number 2.2m – almost one in four young people.

The PES Council today launched an appeal to increase the speed and substance of the European Youth Guarantee (EYG). In a context where around 6 million young people are out of work – and with youth unemployment steadily rising – this guarantee constitutes the potential to give back a future to a whole generation.

Thanks to the action of Commissioner László Andor, the European Commission has put forward a contribution on fighting youth unemployment to the European Council of 27-28 June 2013.

Ahead of a joint meeting on youth unemployment between French and German finance and employment ministers in Paris tomorrow, S&D Group leader Hannes Swoboda called for an "effective and adequately financed youth guarantee".*

In a letter sent to the French and German ministers, he urged them to extend the scope of the youth guarantee to include all young people up to the age of 30 and to increase the funding from the €6 billion proposed so far.

At an extraordinary meeting on 17 May in Paris, European social democratic and socialist ministers urged their conservative and liberal colleagues as well as the European Commission to make progress on strengthening the social dimension of the Economic and Monetary Union.
