There has always been an assumption that the younger generation is more pro-European than those of us who are rather longer in the tooth. 

There’s probably some truth in that generalisation. Opportunities that many younger people have had in Europe, for travel, and even for study or work, have been greater than for previous generations. Not surprisingly this has encouraged a more open-minded approach towards people from other countries, a more tolerant attitude towards different cultures, and a more positive view of the European Union.

The PES Group in the Committee of the Regions succeeded today in defending against conservative (EPP) and liberal (ALDE) opposition, the call for a European Youth Guarantee during the plenary vote on the Resolution on the priorities of the Committee of the Regions for 2013 in view of the work programme of the European Commission.

As a consequence, the CoR "invites the European Commission to present a draft Council recommendation for a Youth Guarantee Regulation and calls for the inclusion of a concrete local and regional dimension in the National Job Plans".

The European young socialists (ECOSY) summer camp met this week in Savudrija, Croatia. The event brought together over 1.600 young people from all over Europe and beyond. This year programme was dedicated to their core values (Equality, Solidarity, Freedom, Participation, and Democracy & Inclusion) and to the celebration of ECOSY’s 20th anniversary.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has warned that a failure to act on the youth jobs crisis threatens to prolong the crisis and delay the economic recovery in the eurozone. In a study that examines the latest labour market reforms and employment trends, ILO has warned that without a youth guarantee and other shifts in policy, the number of jobless people across the eurozone could reach to 22 million in four years.

The Socialist Party (PS) of Portugal has demanded concrete measures to foster employment and improve training and education systems on a national and European scale. In a draft resolution submitted by the PS Group in the Portuguese Parliament, Socialist MPs have strongly recommended the Government to adopt measures to create a youth guarantee.

O Partido Socialista Europeu (PES) lançou uma grande iniciativa política sob o lema “O Teu Futuro é o Meu Futuro” que reclama a introdução de uma Garantia Europeia para os jovens na forma de um novo contrato social que lhes ofereça um emprego, um estágio ou prosseguimento de estudos, no máximo, quatro meses após conclusão do ciclo de estudos ou inscrição no centro de emprego.

Ahead of the EU summit, PES President Sergei Stanishev meets today with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta as part of a progressive effort to push for a Youth Guarantee in the European Council. With over 5,6 million young unemployed in Europe, the need to adopt a European Youth Guarantee is a priority for the PES and must be reflected in the EU summit.

Derzeit sind mehr als 5,5 Mio. junge Menschen in Europa ohne Arbeit. Für den Luxemburger Beschäftigungsminister und Vorsitzenden der sozialistischen Sozial- und Arbeitsminister Nicolas Schmit kommt dieser Befund einer echten Katastrophe gleich. Schmit zufolge besteht das richtige Desaster der Eurozonenkrise darin, dass in einigen Ländern mehr als die Hälfte aller jungen Menschen erwerbslos sind. Sie hätten etwas Besseres verdient, so Beschäftigungsminister  Schmit, der darin auch eine Erklärung dafür sieht, dass Jungwähler sich bei Wahlen vermehrt extremistischen Parteien zuwenden. Jeder Tag, der sich durch Untätigkeit angesichts der Jugendarbeitslosigkeit auszeichne, sei ein Tag, der das Vertrauen in die Demokratie weiter untergrabe, gibt der Luxemburger Beschäftigungsminister am Donnerstag vor Journalisten in Luxemburg zu bedenken.
